Why did the FBI think something like this would work?

On November 21, 1964, a package containing a letter and alleged recordings suggesting that MLK had harassed women, were delivered to his wife, Coretta Scott King. The letter had been written anonymously, had a petty, moralistic tone, was full of personal insults, and threatened to expose the leader’s private life, in order to show the world that he was in fact, a phony.

This letter finally ended up in the hands of MLK:

In view of your low grade, abnormal personal behaviour I will not dignify your name with either a Mr. or a Reverend or a Dr. And your last name calls to mind only the type of King such as King Henry the VIII and his countless acts of adultery and immoral conduct lower than that of a beast.
