The story behind the most disturbing selfie ever taken
Although at first glance this “selfie” does not seem to have anything out of the ordinary, in reality, it is one of the creepiest and most disturbing ever taken.
Two men taking a “selfie” smiling, right in front of a group of women and children.
To understand why this photo is considered the “most disturbing selfie ever taken” you have to know the place and context behind it.
It was taken in Syria. The two smiling men are soldiers led by the government of current President Bashar al Assad.
These two soldiers captured this group of women and children during the siege of Eastern Ghouta. All the children and women are there, “posing” against their will.
If you are not familiar with this topic, The siege of Eastern Ghouta was a siege that was laid by Syrian Government forces in April 2013, to the area in eastern Ghouta held by anti-government forces since 2012, during the Syrian civil war.
According to Wikipedia:
By 2016, around 400,000 people were trapped in an area just over 100 square kilometres in size, thus with a population density around 4,000 inhabitants/km2.
Unfortunately, this group of women and children were in that group and it is presumed that each and every one of them was executed.
Yes, that’s right, these men probably knew the future that held these people, and still, they decided to take a picture first. It’s as if they grinned maliciously knowing what they were going to do next, or maybe they were amused by their terrified face. Just by looking at their expressions, you can see that many of them, are completely terrified.
