In 2000, a video was discovered by the Russian security services, a video, which would change, at least a little, the course of history.

A year before that infamous footage was found, two units of Chechen soldiers crossed into Dagestan, led by Commander Umar Edilsultanov, attacking at dawn the border town of Tukhchar, located in the Novolaksky district. Chechen soldiers exchanged shots with at least 12 Russian soldiers, who were at a police checkpoint to strengthen border security. The Russian soldiers ran out of ammunition, so Lieutenant Vasily Tashkin ordered them to retreat to a second checkpoint. The withdrawal brought a pause in the battle, and that pause was taken advantage of by some Russian soldiers, who took advantage, and escaped from the village in civilian clothes, mixing with the habitants. But Lieutenant Tashkin’s pride told him that he was not going to retreat a second time, so he decided to stay to fight. His conviction and patriotism convinced five other soldiers to stay with him. A decision that would radically change his life.

They barricaded themselves in a barn, but the Chechens ended up surrounding them and poured gasoline on the walls, threatening to burn down the entire structure with them inside.
