Of all the things that can happen when you go to the dentist, finding out that your bones are actually a different color is unusual, to say the least.

Archie Beshort, started to feel a sharp pain in the back of his mouth, he looked in the mirror and realized that his wisdom tooth was starting to erupt, the problem was that instead of white, it was pitch black.

“My teeth are rotting” was Archie’s first thought. So that same day, he made an urgent appointment with his dentist.

At the dentist’s office, he extracted the tooth and according to Archie, the dentist was just as surprised as he was, he had never seen anything like this before, upon close inspection, he realized that the tooth was not in bad shape, in fact it was incredibly healthy. His dentist proceeded to do a series of thorough examinations and noticed something even more impressive. His jaw was black, and most likely, the other bones of his body were possibly black as well.

But why his teeth were black?

There is a scientific explanation. This condition is called “minocycline black bone disease”. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Minocycline is a drug used to treat infections caused by bacteria of the respiratory tract, skin, eyes, lymphatic system, reproductive system or urinary system. Throughout its history, side effects of this have been documented including: vomiting, hair loss, swollen tongue, change in urine color, tears and bones.

Archie as a teenager suffered from severe acne, so for several years he was taking minocycline to combat this skin disorder. This would explain why his bones became dark. Today he is doing well and tells us how he lives with his condition on TikTok.
